Wall work, Drawing, Painting
Growing up in Northern Tasmania, painter Robert Habel’s family home overlooked the mountains and Tamar Valley. Inspired by his surrounds and the diversity of environments within close proximity, Habel began painting ‘en plein air’ as a student of fine art.
Today he continues to do so, enjoying a direct connection with his subject matter and the urgency of the process that imbues his work with a sense of energy. While some works are further developed in the studio, Habel is careful to preserve his initial response to his subject. With a general interest in human intervention in the landscape, he is attracted to the aesthetic potential of the dynamic, contemporary nature of industrial sites and those often topical and contested environments affected by changes in the climate.
Habel regularly exhibits work around Australia and has undertaken residencies in Singapore, Cairns and Tasmania.

Congratulations to Robert Habel whose collaborative feature film project 'Atlantis, Iceland' will screen in the 2017 Adelaide Film Festival. In this experimental documentary-fiction hybrid, two friends visit Iceland and search for the elusive origins of the 1965 footage of Chris Marker's film 'Sunless'. Their journey brings them into contact with punk rockers, politicians and Icelandic mysticism and folklore. Presented at ADL Film Fest as a work-in-progress, the film screens on 13 & 14 October. Also screening in Reykjavik Film Festival (September 28- October 8) and the Antenna Documentary Film Festival in Festival in Sydney (screening October 14, 15).

Robert Habel's painting 'Gillman' is featured in a recent BioCup Art Series. Kate Armstrong, Creative Producer and Curator said of the series, "The project aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of single use disposable packaging and provide solutions that are non-toxic, non-harmful and have no negative effects on the natural environment throughout their lifecycle. We aim to inspire creatives to use their artistic voice to create a positive social impact and hope to encourage consumers to start a meaningful conversation over coffee! We love featuring the work of Australian and New Zealand artists who explore positive environmental messages."
