Jewellery, Metal, Wearables
Jeweller Kate Sutherland is fascinated with how adornment affects the wearer, not only as a physical object, but as a part of their identity. Her work explores the relationship between metal and the human body and the symbolism and meaning that is placed in jewellery. The formal qualities of highly polished precious metal and its mercury like presence has come to stand for the marriage of metal and the body - an aesthetic that is central to her practice.
Sutherland is fascinated by the technical process and working with materials to achieve a desired result. Her work is influenced by clean lines and simplicity, surface reflection, repeating pattern and geometric shape, referencing elements of tribal jewellery, sacred geometry, dotwork tattoo and markings. Her time within the JamFactory community, amongst inspiring craftspeople has pushed her to achieve a high standard of work as well as giving her a solid base within an arts community, which continues to shape and inspire her.
After completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts specialising in Jewellery and Metals in 2005 at the University of South Australia, Sutherland went on to complete an apprenticeship with a certificate III in jewellery manufacture (2010), Postgraduate Diploma (2011) and a Masters Degree specialising in Jewellery and Metals in 2012. She completed the 2 year associate program in the metal studio at JamFactory in 2013 and is now a studio tenant.
