Cheryl Bridgart

Painting, Textiles, Wearables

Cheryl Bridgart is a textile artist who has perfected a unique freehand embroidery technique she describes as drawing with her sewing machine. Using only a needle and thread, she creates tactile, expressive visual narratives inspired by her daily life and dreams. A labour intensive technique, it is immediate and spontaneous but leaves little room for error.

Bridgart is a passionate and prolific maker who, as well as producing vibrant, detailed works on paper and canvas, designs, drafts, tailors and embroiders all her own clothes. She exhibits nationally and internationally and is regularly invited to demonstrate her technique. In 2015 she was one of eight artists to create an original cover for the special SALA Festival issue of SA Weekend Magazine, and she is frequently commissioned to create portraits and other one-off pieces for private clients.
