It was a four-month internship in Mexico that cemented Caren Elliss’ desire to pursue a career in design. The JamFactory Alumni, who was part way through an Industrial Design degree at the University of South Australia at the time, interned at Air Design before graduating with Honours and going on to complete the JamFactory’s Associate program in the Furniture studio.
Elliss appreciates the Scandinavian aesthetic and enjoys the challenge of experimenting with new processes. Her Splinter Stools, combining the industrial strength of powder coated mild steel and the warmth of American Oak, are customizable by colour and were picked up for manufacture by Woodmark after being exhibited in Workshopped 2014, an annual showcase for young and emerging Australian designers. She has completed fit outs for Mister Sunshine’s and Nook Nosh Wine Bar, works with residential clients creating custom one-off designs, and is currently mentoring Edward Hayter as part of Guildhouse’s Limber Up program.

Caren Elliss | Luhne Range For Fibonnaci Stone

Read about Caren Elliss Design partnership with Fibonacci Stone. Caren is drawn to the visual appeal of terrazzo and the many ways in which it can be used. “I think most people have a story about how their grandparents used to have it in their bathroom or on their floor,” she says. “I think it deserves to be utilised more and I want to see it being incorporated into furniture more so. I see it for its luxuriousness and I believe when paired with more subtle materials it offers an opulence that is on par with marble.”
Limber Up Mentor Program (Guildhouse)
29 Sep 2016
Caren Elliss mentored Ed Hayter as part of the Limber Up program with Guildhouse. Ed has a lighting project for an inner city Wine Bar/Cafe. Caren led Edward through the logistics of developing an idea into a fully constructed prototype, how to cost a product, the value of scale models and when to use them, as well as highlighting manufacturing processes and options. Caren introduced Edward to potential fabricators and accompanied him to a first meeting thus opening up the discussion to help him understand the process and pro's and con's of his design.
